The terms “mindfulness” & “meditation” are often used interchangeably, with both practices being a-like, yet separate. Both practices have the same benefits of calming the mind, accessing inner peace & increasing happiness.

Mindfulness is the act of being present in the moment – also described to as simply being aware moment-to-moment. The beauty of mindfulness is that you can practice it anywhere, any time or in any experience.  So let’s take that glorious morning coffee – we practice mindfulness by tuning into what we are sensing in the present moment as we drink our hot cup of coffee, taking in the scents, warmth, taste, being aware of our thoughts and feelings in this experience.

Meditation is a formal practice to calm the mind and access inner peace, generally practiced seated or laying with eyes closed down. Our minds have the tendency to be restless, jumping from one thought to the next. Meditation brings our awareness to our thoughts and teaches us to be the observer rather than engaging in the thoughts. I like to imagine my thoughts floating on by like clouds in the sky, this process of observation we learn about our inner world, perhaps we see how habitual thoughts of negativity, dwelling in the past or catastrophizing the future. Witnessing our thoughts while meditating and not attaching to them helps to quiet down the mental chatter, leading us to a place of inner peace. There are many different forms of meditation such as guided meditation, concentrative meditation where you focus on something like the breath, a sound/mantra, object or image, when we give our mind something to focus on we begin to access the world of inner stillness.
